NUN: Judy Takacs Paints Retired Sisters of Notre Dame

Starting with red and pink oil paints, professional artist, Judy Takács painted the animated and engaging faces, and listened to the fascinating stories of six retired sisters who are residents of the Chardon, Ohio province.

Judy Takács began her career in 1986 after graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Art. A seven time Best of Show winner, her work has been exhibited in juried, group and solo exhibits all over Northeast Ohio. She has also been written up in newspapers and magazines including The Plain Dealer, Cleveland Scene Magazine, the Akron Beacon Journal and the Collective Arts Network Journal (CAN Journal).

Her latest project, “NUN: Judy Takács paints the retired Sisters of Notre Dame” started in November of 2013. For six weeks, Judy came to SND’s health center each week to paint a portrait of a different sister from life. The sisters posed for two hours each, with breaks. Judy then worked for another 25 or so hours on each portrait back at her studio in Solon.

“I cannot begin to express my appreciation for the great joy I received from the sisters I painted, and the ones who came to watch. My special thanks to my mother, Dalma Takács who put me in touch with the Notre Dame Health Center, and to Sister Annemarie Kall who arranged for my models and made sure I had a wonderful place to paint while I was here,” said Judy.

“NUN” consists of 9 paintings of seven sisters of Notre Dame: Sr. Mary Annfrancis Demming, Sr. Mary Deborah Carlin, Sr. Marian Coughlin, Sr. Mary Sharone Matoney, Sr. Mary Patricia Gannon, Sr. Mary St. Mark Florence and Sr. Annemarie Kall. Judy’s use of lustrous color and painterly realism bring the portraits to life, telling the sisters’ unique stories. Judy incorporates their uniqueness into her pieces’ titles; among them are titles “The Brave,” “Grace” and “Quiet Joy.”

NUN will be on display in the Clara Fritzsche Library Gallery at Notre Dame College from April 10 through May 23. An opening reception will be held on April 10, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
