Bishop Nelson Perez, the recently installed Bishop of Cleveland, met at Notre Dame Education Center with approximately 300 sisters who serve in the diocese. The meeting was live-streamed for other sisters unable to attend in person. The program began at 10:00 a.m. with Morning Prayer, followed by a presentation by Bishop Perez. He expressed his gratitude for the presence and ministry of women religious, recalling the words of Pope Francis during his visit to the United States: that a spirit of gratitude and the joy of those who love God will lead others to an encounter with Jesus. The Bishop noted that the result of (our) apostolic service cannot always be measured by the same kind of outward success that governs the business world; accountability and good practices are certainly important, but it is God who works through us by grace, often in ways we will never realize.
When asked how religious communities might be of help to him, Bishop Perez said first of all, by praying for him-and that it is both humbling and encouraging to know that he is prayed for by name at every Mass. Secondly, by being ourselves and by doing whatever we can, wherever we are, “with trust and hope,” we will all help the Church of Cleveland. Following the question and answer session, the sisters enjoyed box lunches and time to re-connect with friends from the various communities.
