Sr. Mary Deborah Carlin – Primary Aide, Notre Dame Elementary School
Being an avid, lifetime student, I love to help others learn. After fifty-five years in education, I chose to retire, but I still wanted to be involved with children and learning. I found the perfect opportunity at Notre Dame Elementary School here in Chardon. My focus is reading fluency. I sit with each second grader and listen to him/her read a short story, assessing words per minute, eye movement, pronunciation, and expression. It is a great help for teachers and I find great joy in seeing each child grow in confidence and skill. Most say they like to read. I think there is great mystery in the process. “Reading will set you free! It can take you anywhere!” I tell them. They respond with believing smiles. Besides this, I do whatever the teachers may need. I am so grateful to be part of NDES and to know such dedicated and talented educators. I feel so close to our foundresses, who encountered one child at a time, loved deeply and did what was needed at the moment.
