St. Helen Church Prayer Shawl Ministry Reaches Milestone

Sister Mary Lenette Marcello, SND,(far right)  not only serves as the provincial superior’s executive secretary but most Monday evenings she is busy creating crocheted or knitted items as part of the Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. Helen Catholic Church, Newbury, Ohio.  For the past 11 years, a group of 25 women has come together every Monday evening to create prayer shawls, lap robes, and baby blankets for anyone in need of healing, comfort, or encouragement.  This group recently reached a milestone by completing 3,000 handmade items.

The group was founded by Ethel Pikus in memory of her daughter Christine, who, while battling cancer, had received a prayer shawl from a friend. After Christine’s death, Ethel wanted to extend to others the same comfort that her daughter felt from the shawl and prayer that accompanied it. Sr. Lenette shared, “Each crocheted or knitted item is cataloged and photographed before being blessed by Fr. Jay McPhillips, pastor at St. Helen.”  Items are distributed free of charge, along with a prayer card and handmade rosary.

If you enjoy knitting or crocheting, or would like to learn, come and join the group! For more information, or to help support this ministry, contact St. Helen Prayer Shawl Ministry, located at 12060 Kinsman Road, Newbury, OH 44065 or call 440.564.5805.
