Sister Mary Doreen Strahler, SND; March 23, 1929 – October 7, 2020

Our dear Sister Mary Doreen was welcomed into eternal life at 12:10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7, the Feast of the Holy Rosary. Sister grew up on the family farm in Randolph. Living close to nature always provided nourishment for her soul. She was an extraordinary community woman, an outstanding educator and a gifted poet. Her teaching assignments included each of the elementary grades. She was a teaching principal for twelve years and the superior of the house for thirty-nine years! May Sister Mary Doreen know the gentle embrace of our good and loving God. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Sister Mary Doreen on Tuesday, October 13, beginning at 10:15 a.m.

I always thought that Sr. Doreen was the most beautiful Notre Dame Sister, not just physically but spiritually, emotionally, in every way she presented beauty. She pretty much raised me as a student in several classes at St. Joseph elementary school in Cleveland. At that time during the 60’s not only was she a teacher, but also the convent supervisor, principle of the school and supervising the building of our new school and their new convent. That was quite a bit to have on one’s plate but she pulled it off with flying colors and everything turned out just beautifully. I can remember arriving at the sisters convent on Saturdays to help clean and thinking (back then) what a privilidge it was to actually be inside different rooms of the convent thanks to Sr. Doreen. Thanks to her she led me to be an Aspirant at Notre Dame. Most notably in her later days was the beautiful poetry she wrote. Our Dear Lord was most certainly proud to welcome this beautiful soul into His Kingdom.
